The deadline for "That First Line" Writing Contest is September 1. Take a real or imagined first line of a story or novel, type it into the online form, pay the $5 entry fee, and you'll be in the running for a $500 first prize--assuming you win, of course.

Wordsmiths Books of Decatur, GA, sent out an SOS call for help earlier this month. The independent bookstore was in danger of having to close. The call got picked up by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, National Public Radio, and numerous blogs and news sites. So far, $25,000 has been raised and the store is out of immediate danger. If you can't stand seeing independent bookstores in trouble, check out their web site and buy a few books, pick an event to attend, or send in a contribution.
